Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Bill Farmer toured Padang, West Sumatra, on Tuesday to promote quake-proof buildings.

The campaign, themed “Not the quake, but the building”, aimed to raise awareness about the need to recover from disaster with “more-well constructed” homes.

People in Padang are currently involved in rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts following the magnitude 7.9 earthquake on Sept. 30 last year, which killed 1,117 people.

West Sumatra Governor Marlis Rahman and Sugeng Triutomo, representing the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) attended the event.

Farmer said it was the right time to encourage people and local administrations in West Sumatra to build better homes and public facilities for the sake of minimizing the number of casualties in the event of another quake in the future. “The cost of constructing homes and buildings would be a bit higher, but it is a smart investment for the sake of children and family safety,’ he said.

The Australian government, according to Farmer, has paid attention to disaster mitigation efforts in West Sumatra and was committed to provide A$15 million in aid for emergency response, rehabilitation and reconstruction.
